The novel is set against the playful landscape of the summer of 2013 in New York City. Though Isa's mother is no longer in her life for reasons we find out towards the end of the novel (don't worry-I won't spoil anything for you), we do learn that she holds one piece of maternal advice close to her heart: "In life, you must familiarize yourself with what is glamorous." And so she does. "Wash the white clothes on Monday and put them on the stone heap wash the color clothes on Tuesday and put them on the clothesline to dry don't walk bare-head in the hot sun cook pumpkin fritters in very hot sweet oil soak your little cloths right after you take them off." The mother imparts practical tips, advice on making the most out of life, and several scoldings, all with the hope that it will help her daughter survive in a patriarchal society. ![]() It calls to mind "Girl", the short story by Jamaica Kincaid, which is one long sentence packed with instructions from a mother passed down to her daughter. ![]() "My mother always told me that to be a girl one must be especially clever." If you’ve never tried a Georgette Heyer regency novel before, now is a good time to read one. In Two Castles, her words have more gravity, and the pace is more ponderous. In Ella Enchanted, her prose is breathless and fast-paced. Strangely enough, although A Tale of Two Castles has a much younger protagonist than Ella Enchanted, I found the writing style in this book infinitely less juvenile. And in Two Castles, she manages to weave her magic, yet again. The beauty of her writing lies in her ability to create enduringly endearing characters. This movie is very realistic when the black man was Lynched by the Klan’s in so many ways has destroyed the families for decades. The movie struck me because as an African American light skinned woman as Jasmine Guy and her daughter Hailey Berry experienced what has happened for years with the fair skinned women sleeping with the Master and not being recognized because of the color of your skin and hiding the truth because this was unheard because you’re black. It's a movie that entails a black woman’s struggles with slavery and how she was not acknowledged because of her skin color and was not suppose to be able to read back in those times. The actors and actresses playing in this movie were phenomenal. This is an awesome movie written by Alex Haley in his memory. ![]() |
